ABOUT THE CLUB

The history of the club goes back to the 1960s when there was a single riding club in the whole of Shropshire. In 1969, this club separated into Shropshire South Riding Club and, in the north, Shrewsbury Riding Club. Our Club constitution, written in 1978, talked of "promoting good fellowship among riders" and "improving the standard of riding and horsemanship". This is still at the heart of Shropshire South R.C.

The organisation of events is undertaken by the Committee who try to make it as easy and as much fun as possible for everyone to take part in club activities. Currently there are 11 members on the Committee and they meet regularly to arrange training, social events, educational talks, demonstrations and competitions.
The help of club members is vital to the smooth running of activities. We encourage and acknowledge the help from our members who realise that being part of a club entails helping with the organisation of some activities through the year. Newsletters are mailed directly to members; they detail training, social events and Mercian and Area 18 competitions, in addition to other news and views.

An AGM is held every October to elect the Committee, adopt the audited accounts, and award the trophies. This is the time when pertinent matters can be raised. The AGM is also a social event providing the chance to catch up with friends over refreshments.

Shropshire South Riding Club is affiliated to British Riding Clubs and is part of Area 18. We try to send teams to participate in as many Area 18 competitions as possible. In recent years, the club has been represented at BRC National Championships in Dressage; Novice, Junior and Senior, Dressage to Music; Individual and Pairs, and Novice Indoor Show Jumping. We also take an active role in Mercian Competitions and were runners-up in 2005.

We run regular club competitions and they are all well-run, friendly affairs. We intend everyone to enjoy their day out with their horse. We have recently decided that in all classes the number of rosettes will be determined by the number of starters. This means that we will give rosettes to 10th place in classes of over 14 starters.

Our summer Dressage competitions are held at several lovely venues including Mawley Hall and Kinlet Hall which is where the annual SSRC Championships are held. We are lucky to have the use of Lambda Court and Kyre Equestrian Centre, with its indoor school and all-weather menage, for our winter Dressage and training. During the summer we run show jumping competitions at a number of venues on grass and surfaces, including our new venture, ‘Nervous & Novice’ show jumping, which has proved very popular.

Shropshire South Riding Club is a vibrant, inclusive club dedicated to supporting and encouraging each of its 195 members to achieve their aspirations with their horses. New members are always welcome, so if you'd like to join us ring Carolin Gibbs for further details.
